In "A Sad Child" by Margaret Atwood, she uses imagery, metaphor, and diction to depict how some women (or a girl) may feel about becoming a woman. The speaker in this poem seems to be a girl or woman describing their feelings to a younger girl about the first time she menstruated, while also telling her feelings about the treatment of females in society.
The speaker can be assumed to be a female because of the imagery used. Dolls, a dress, sugar, and a riboon are mentioned, whoch can be easiy associated with girls. GIrls are thought of as swet, having dolls, and wearing ribbons and dresses. There is the imagery of blood which can be linked to the menstrual cycle, "in the bathroom", "trapped in your overturned body", "red flame seeping out of you". The way that the speaker ran in to go to the bathroom and abruptly says" I am not the favorite child" can be associated with a girls first menstruation due to the fact that it signifies coming of age, and usually the younger children are the favorites, makin gher not be the favorite now that she has grown. The line "trapped in your overturned body" can depict how a girl feels, because the situation is out of her control because it is a normal bodily function.
In regards to ths theory, metaphor is used in the second stanza by how it says, "buy a hat. Buy a coat or pet. Take up dancing to forget." This metaphor stands for covering up one's feelings and forgetting them. These things are distractions and material objects to cover up one's feelings. This shows how the female speaker feels that she is not truly cared bout, but given things and pushed to the side, whilethe males are not given gifts and said to just "take a pill" to cover up their emotions.
Now if you think about Atwood's writing, this menstrual cycle theory for the poem fits her sarcastic nature. She describes the experience as a horrible thin, trying to make the statement that women shouyld not let things like their bodily functions hold them back and dont let males use it against them. Basically, she is hinting at the oppression of women in society.

The Follower

However, the poem can be interpreted in different ways, due to the connotative meanings within the poem. The title of this poem is connotative, because it can mean apprentice and follower as in to literally trail behind someone or follow in their footsteps depending on which interpretation you follow, different conclusions can be made, however, the things they all have in common is that the son in the follower in the first five stanzas of the poem, however, in the last one, the father has become the follower.
The way that the speaker uses nautical imagery to express his feelings towards his father’s work on the farm, shows that he truly admires him. Just like people believe that sails are beautiful. He believes that his father working is beautiful, “his shoulders globed like a full sail strung”. The way that he says his father was “mapping the furrow exactly” shows that his father was knowledgeable about his work and knew exactly what he was doing.
Last three stanza the speaker describes how as he followed his father, he never really appreciated the work his father did, but he does now, and his father has become the follower. This is when it gets tricky, because you can interpret the way he sees his father as, that now that he is old he cannot work, so he has taken the responsibility of the farm as if it were a cycle. However, another approach is that now that his father is old, he cannot work, and there for monitors his son’s work by “following” him.

Mid-Term BREAK
Mid-term Break
I sat all morning in the college sick bayCounting bells knelling classes to a close,At two o'clock our neighbors drove me home.In the porch I met my father crying--He had always taken funerals in his stride--And Big Jim Evans saying it was a hard blow.The baby cooed and laughed and rocked the pramWhen I came in, and I was embarrassedBy old men standing up to shake my handAnd tell me they were "sorry for my trouble,"Whispers informed strangers I was the eldest,Away at school, as my mother held my handIn hers and coughed out angry tearless sighs.At ten o'clock the ambulance arrivedWith the corpse, stanched and bandaged by the nurses.Next morning I went up into the room. SnowdropsAnd candles soothed the bedside; I saw himFor the first time in six weeks. Paler now,Wearing a poppy bruise on the left temple,He lay in the four foot box as in a cot.No gaudy scars, the bumper knocked him clear.A four foot box, a foot for every year.
COMMENTARY
In "Mid-Term Break" by Seamus Heaney, he uses sense 0f time and enjambment to emphasize how long the speaker's mourning of his brother's death felt. The brother spoken of in the powem can be seen as a metaphor for the dispute between Ireland and Britain. This is due to the fact that although Heaney is from Ireland, he felt that Britain and Ireland should work together as "brothers" in a sense. However, since the issues came to being, Seamus Heaney felt the separation between Ireland and Britain, which caused depression in Ireland. In other words, the death of his brother and the speaker's loss can be a metaphor for how Britain is lost to Ireland and Ireland is left with grief and violence.
Time is used in this poem to show how the speaker is depressed and empty due to the grief caused by his brother's death. The way that the speaker uses time, it shows how time just seems to go by without his brother around, because he feels empty, yet he can still remember little details from his brother's death and funeral as if it were just yesterday. "At ten o'clock the ambulance arrived" and "I saw him for the first time in six weeks". (loss of time? as in, he lost track of time due to the fact that it seems like they just go by without his brother)

- In the poem "Song" by John donne, he uses a combination on various literary techniques to emphasize the idea that women are untrue. He uses the rhyme scheme "ABABCCDDD" to give the poem the satirical sense it has. The diction he uses also reflects the speaker's ambiguoug wording, which highlights the condescending tone of the whole poem.
- When Donne uses the rhyme scheme "ABABCCDDD" he does this to mock love songs by making the poem have a singy-songey flow to it. By doing this he highlights the speaker's negative beliefs regarding women. He makes the poem have a lovely flow, however, it is not stating anything lovely at all. At the beginnings of several lines, Donne uses demanding terms that make the lines sarcastic, by saying things like "Go, and catch a faling star" and "teach me to hear mermaids singing". This shows how he carries on a condescending tone, due to the fact that the speaker does not want the reader to in fact do these things, but to emphasize that just like it is impossible to do these things, it is impossible to find a truthful and faithful woman.
- Donne chooses to use diction to highlight the ambiguous nature of women, in how they might be beautiful, yet they actually are unfaithful and untruthful. A combination of the diction and rhyme scheme used in this poem, both highlight his thoughts and feelings towards his true love. The dictions Donne uses also depicts the narrator's tone in regards to the past without his love, the present and the future with his love. This poem and the techniques Donne uses tell the passion and spiritual connection that the speaker has towards his love.

Act of Resistance 101
Okay, so did my first act of resistance ever on Wednesday, for our assignment. I chose to hand out clips of Various issues that I wrote about, that exist in our society today. I want to raise awareness to them and just show my classmates that although some issues may seem like “Oh, that wouldn’t happen to anyone I know …” or “That stuff doesn’t go on all the time ... only when the news mentions it”, these issues are real and happen to people everyday. I chose to write about : suicide, drunk driving, gay marriage, our environment, and hate crimes.
Personally, coming up with the act was more influential to me than actually doing it, just because of the fact that while I researched the statistics regarding these issues, I myself was in a sense (for lack of better terms) “dumb-founded” . I simply could not believe how much these issues impact the lives of people everyday and every year. The issues that impacted me the most were drunk driving and suicide. I cannot believe that half of the accidents that occur in Wisconsin can be avoided if only people used their common sense and chose the right decision to not only keep their lives from danger, but the lives of others also.
Suicide impacted me greatly because of the fact that suicides are the second leading cause of teen deaths, following vehicular homicide. Not only that, but I AM a teen and it is hard for me to picture that anyone I encounter throughout my day both at school and outside of school could even consider suicide. Another reason why Suicide hit me the hardest is because when I handed one to Ms. Daroszeski (you) she told me about when she can across a story about a seventeen year old young man who decided he was going to commit suicide live on the internet. He was in a live chat rooms with cruel human beings (if you want to consider them human after what they were doing) who were egging him on, to commit suicide right before their eyes. He chose to overdose on medication and there were a few lovely souls who seen the cruelty and wanted to reach the people who ran the sight so that they could find him hopefully in time to hospitalize him. Turned out they found him twelve hours later dead, and the camera was still running when the police arrived. I cannot believe that someone would first of all, do this, and second of all, WATCH. Not only that, but those people were egging him on. This is just evidence to why our world is becoming worse and worse in a sense that people do not have respect for themselves, others, of the environment which sustains their lives. In my eyes, it really is just pitiful.
While I was doing my act of resistance, I really was happy when people took the time to read my clips and they actually were “dumb-founded” just like me. I feel that they were ashamed at how ignorant people can be these days. One experience that I was somewhat upset with was that when I gave a clip to a fellow classmate, they chose to set it aside and not even give it a look, my reaction was to take the clip and give it to someone who would actually take the time to read it and I did. This was just evidence to me, why these issues occur. People choose to be ignorant to the issues that occur in society and that is why these things keep going on. If people took that time to be more aware, we would not have these problems. I do not mean to “bust anyone out”, because I respect everyone, I just thought I might share this because I wass totally appalled by this behavior.
If I were to do anything differently, I think I should have handed out more clips and handed them out in the hallways rather than just in my classes, because I feel like seniors are usually more mature and aware of issues and the underclassmen should be filed in on the issues too, so that they could carry on the awareness to Rufus King’s future students.
Well, as far as if my act has any affect on the future, I am not sure, but I know that f someone in my classes is encountering these issues they will think twice about their actions because they can be the ones to save someone’s life, even their own. In the future, I hope that I can be part of a huge movement to tackle these issues in society, and I will always try to stay aware of the issues and be updated to see if the world as we know it is improving.

Our world as we know it, does not have a never ending supply of natural resources and many of us sometimes forget this. We leave the water running as we brush our teeth, we forget to recycle, and leave lights on as we leave rooms…there are so many things we forget to due, but they all hurt our environment.

HATE CRIMES…
The number of hate crimes occurring in Wisconsin has over doubled in the last decade. Hate Crimes are those committed against another person due to them being “different”. The most common hate crimes are those against, those of another religion or sexual preference. About 46% of hate crimes are never even reported. If we live in a nation where people are suppose to be embraced by diversity…why are these things happening?
HATE CRIMES ARE NEVER ACCEPTABLE…NO CRIMES ARE ACCEPTABLE. THINK TWICE BEFORE JUDGING SOMEONE ELSE!
DRUNK DRIVING…
In 2006, there were approximately 772 vehicle accidents in Wisconsin alone. 352 of those vehicle accidents were due to a driver being under the influence of alcohol. That means that approximately 46% of accidents were caused by drunk drivers. You can only imagine how the numbers have gone up since then.
HELP TO PREVENT ALCOHOL-RELATED ACCIDENTS, MAKE SURE YOU FAMILY RETURNS HOME SAFE AFTER THE HOLIDAYS…DON’T LET THEM DRIVE DRUNK!
GAY MARRIAGE…
Imagine if you could not marry someone you loved, because you weren’t granted the right. You would have built your lives together, to not be granted the right to legally be binded. If one of you grew old and were to die…the other would be left with nothing, not matter even if the deceased partner was the provider in the relationship. The partner left would be left to fend for themselves.
YOUR SEXUALITY SHOULD NOT AFFECT THE RIGHTS GRANTED TO YOU BY LAW. HELP SO THAT NO ONE WILL BE LEFT ALONE!

Males tend to commit suicide by a significantly greater margin than females. There are about 2,000 hospitalizations each year for suicide attempts within this age group.
SUICIDE IS A REAL PROBLEM AMONGST TEENS. LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AND MAKE SURE EVERYONE KNOWS THAT THEIR LIFE IS WORTH LIVING!
Personally, coming up with the act was more influential to me than actually doing it, just because of the fact that while I researched the statistics regarding these issues, I myself was in a sense (for lack of better terms) “dumb-founded” . I simply could not believe how much these issues impact the lives of people everyday and every year. The issues that impacted me the most were drunk driving and suicide. I cannot believe that half of the accidents that occur in Wisconsin can be avoided if only people used their common sense and chose the right decision to not only keep their lives from danger, but the lives of others also.
